Born in Rabat 1963, Amina Benbouchta now lives and works in Casablanca, Morocco.
At a young age, she came to painting by the classical pathway as she started to learn the traditional abstract in École de Paris. She studied anthropology in Canada, and in parallel, I continued to paint. And when she graduated, Benbouchta moved to Paris for where she participated in workshops of drawing. In the 1980s, she returned to Morocco
where she mostly based.
According to Benbouchta, her symbols are personal metaphysics on the edge of the spiritual, a quest for meaning and also a quest for the essence of painting which really
comes from her Western heritage as she feels more connected to artists like Cy Twombly and Basquiat. |
