Doris Bittar

Doris Bittar’s paintings, photographs and installations focus on the intertwined legacies of the Middle East with those of the West. Bittar reveals the complexities of Middle Eastern history, culture and politics, framing them into concepts and narratives that are often tethered to the lives of ordinary people. Her current projects examine decorative traditions, how they transform and overlap within specific geo-historical urban centers from the Middle East and Europe. Bittar was featured in the Sharjah Biennial in 2009 and in the Ninapi Gallery in the old city of Ravenna, Italy 2008. In Ravenna, the piece “Soap Story” made of over 1000 bars of olive oil soap imported from Lebanon created a dialogue between Ravenna and Beirut, one that acknowledged their shared Roman and Byzantine legacies.
