| Rules & Regulations: |
Article (1) Invitations will be sent directly to nominated artists, either independently or in collaboration with official or private institutions or organizations. |
Article (2) The Biennial's curator, in collaboration with the Biennial's president, nominates and invites the artists. |
Article (3) Two projects from the Mediterranean will be invited as the Alexandria Biennial's guests of honor. |
Article (4) All visual arts disciplines and mediums of expression are accepted. |
Article (5) With respect to the UN Charter, international law and the Arab League's Charter, artists from countries that violate the sovereignty of other states or occupy foreign territory will not be invited to take part in the Alexandria Biennial. |
Article (6) The inauguration date of the 25th edition of the Alexandria Biennial will take place on Thursday, 17 th of December, 2009. |
Regulations for works submitted in the Biennial: |
Article (7) Works submitted for the competition should have been produced in the two years preceding the Biennial 2007-2008, in the theme of the Biennial, and should have not received awards in previous international exhibitions. This should be verified on the artwork by the artists. Works exhibited and awarded in previous exhibitions will be accepted out of competition. This should be mentioned in the data sent to the Biennial. |
| Article (8) Each artist is entitled to exhibit five works max (with dimensions not exceeding 6 × 3 meter squared dimension for two dimensional works). Please coordinate with the Alexandria Biennial's curator directly for instructions related to installation. |
| Article (9) Technology-incorporating works, video art, performance and installation should be discussed with the curator; all material requirements, equipment, fixtures or others, should be agreed upon prior to the process of installation. All details should be mentioned in the application form. |
| Article (10) Indoor two-dimensional works should not exceed 3m in horizontal dimension. Three-dimensional artworks (sculpture, etc.) should not occupy 2m in any horizontal plane. Outdoor thee-dimensional artworks should be discussed and agreed upon with the curator and details should be mentioned in the application form. |
| Article (11) For time-based artworks (video and sound artworks), all dialogue or screen-conversation incorporated in the work should be translated into English. |
Article (12) Invited artists or their supporting, sponsoring or representing institutions should send the following to the biennial's organizing committee: - The application form, together with the catalogue material, filled and signed by the artist. - Detailed biography of the artist.- Artist's statement. - Personal photo of the artist - 300 DPI print quality images of artworks. Computer or draft designs of the installation is much appreciated - Published articles and essays about the artist's practice, if available, - Additional images of former art projects; this additional material will help for press and media purposes. - Time-based artworks (video and sound) should be submitted on DVD-R. All necessary data and descriptions should be clearly stated. For the safety of the work, artists are advised to state the electricity requirements (Voltage in Alexandria is 220 Volts). Image specifications: - Digital images TIFF or JPEG, 300 DPI should be 20 cm X 18 cm.- The name of the file, the artist, the title of the work, technical specifications, date of production, measurements and the name of the photographer should be clearly stated. - All information and documents are required in: .doc/ .rtf / .txt files. - Print-out images should be illustrated on the back. - All material should be sent both by post and by email. |
Article (13) All material sent by the artist to the biennale will be the property of the biennale for media, press and later for archival purposes. All received material will not be reclaimed back by the artist or her/his representatives. |
Article (14) The Sector of Fine Arts (Egyptian Ministry of Culture) and the Biennial's organizing committee have the right to use the material for the purposes of media, press, publicity and other, without obtaining a prior consent of the artist. |
Intellectual property rights are respected and preserved. The Alexandria Biennale organizing committee will sponsor the publicity and advertising campaigns in local and inter-national mass media. |
Deadlines: |
Article (15) The Catalogue material should be sent to the Alexandria Biennial before September 1, 2009. |
Article (16) Works should be received at the Alexandria Biennial address before November 1, 2009. |
Article (17) Each country or institutions are responsible for packaging, shipping, insuring and sending the exhibited works to Cairo address before the deadline, as well as for reclaiming them after the end of the Biennial. It is advisable to coordinate with the Sector of Fine Arts during all steps of this process, since the Sector will receive the works and arrange the exhibition. |
Article (18) Selected artists with special invitations should coordinate with Biennial's president and its curator. |
| Article (19) It is advisable to notify the Alexandria Biennial organizing committee, through fax and/or email, of the date of shipment, tracking numbers, flight/shipping details and the name of the shipping agency. |
| Article (20) Each shipped work should state clearly the name of the artist, her/his nationality, the country in which she/he lives and works, the title of the work, measurements, and insurance value. All information should be consistent with the application form.The same information and data should be stated on the container. |
Article (21) In collaboration with the Sector of Fine Arts, artists should reclaim their works within 30 (thirty) days of the end of the 25th edition of the Alexandria Biennial. |
| Awards: |
Article (22) The 25 th Alexandria Biennial's jury will comprise seven members; six international non- Mediterranean members and one Egyptian member. The jury decisions are final and binding. |
Article (23) The Biennial's awards consist of one major award and three other awards with equal values: The “Alexandria Lighthouse” Award in the value of 100.000 L.E. (One hundred thousand Egyptian Pounds). Three equal awards called “The Biennial Award” each in the value of 35.000 L.E. (Thirty five thousand Egyptian Pounds). |
